#lovenorwich: Charity and Vintage

One of the reasons we #lovenorwich is because of the amazing selection of charity, vintage and antique stores scattered throughout the city. Whilst the usual high street shops are great, there’s nothing quite like finding the perfect, unique vintage piece and at a very good price. And if you’re in a charity shop, then you also have the benefit of your money going to a good cause! While exploring Norwich’s little lanes and streets, you can come across some of the most wonderful places.  Here, we want to highlight some of our favourites. If you have any others you think deserve a shout out, let us know about them on our Facebook or Twitter accounts!

Retreat Vintage, situated just down the road from us on Magdalen Street, is a haven for genuine vintage items from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.  They’re described as a vintage shop that’s ‘more punk than Cath Kidson’ and are happy to help you if you are looking for something in particular. They recently celebrated their 4th birthday, and RV is a wonderful place to find unique, genuine vintage items.

A family run business that launched in 2010, Goldfinches Vintage is a delightful shop that has a wide range of vintage accessories and  garments. The shop offers the option of online shopping, with ordering and click and collect services. Find them in St Gregorys Alley.

Situated in Anglia Square, Back In Time has affordable women and men’s clothing from 1930s to the 1980s. It has been described by customers as having a ‘Camden feel’. Who needs to head to London’s famous market, when you can explore Back In Time!

A charity shop on Magdalen Street, Save The Children is an ‘international NGO and charity striving to help support and protect children in developing countries. Save the Children focuses on tackling child hunger, providing access to education and advancing the rights of children around the world.’ You can find some excellent pieces amongst the donations here, while helping children at the same time.

Sense helps deafblind people and has a wide array of donated furniture, antiques, collectables and clothing, DVDS and household items. The Norwich shop in Anglia Square has a great selection of items where you can always find something unique to buy.

Here at Vintage RSPCA Norwich, we are incredibly proud of our city. The amazing residents and visitors do so much to help us, from volunteering, to donating and purchasing our items.

But there are lots of reasons why we feel so lucky to be in Norwich, on the amazing Magdalen Street. So we want to celebrate the beautiful place we call home with all of you!

Join us on Twitter with the hashtag #lovenorwich and let us know why YOU love this city! We’ll also be posting some of the things we love, as well as some blog posts featuring the best of Norwich!

One of the reasons WE love Norwich, is because of the amazing vintage and antique stores, as well as the great array of charity shops that do so much good work! Keep your eyes peeled for a new blog post celebrating them! Community spirit is important, so whether you live in Norwich or Norfolk, or you just love it, get in touch with us on Twitter or Facebook and tell us why!

Animal To Adopt Of The Week

Meet Teddy, a pup with LOTS of energy! He loves to run and play, so he’s looking for a family who can keep up with him and give him lots of exercise. He has a sweet personality, enjoys a cuddle, as well as playing and going out for walks. He’s a good walker, and has basic training so knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’. He loves to learn, especially if you have treats!

He was rehomed a few months ago, but didn’t like being left alone very much. He’s now looking for a home where he will have lots of company through the day and an owner who can help him learn it’s OK to be alone and have some ‘me time’ sometimes.

Ideally he would benefit from having another dog in the household which would help him cope with being alone sometimes.

Volunteers Week!

Volunteers Week is taking place from today – 1st June – until 7th June, and all week we’re going to be celebrating our wonderful volunteers and letting everyone know just why volunteering is so great! Stay tuned to our blog and our twitter (@vtgrspcanorwich) for some great content during this week! To start the week off with a bang, we thought we’d talk about why volunteering at your local RSPCA charity shop is so important!

It takes a lot to run one of our shops, and they just would not be able to function without the help of volunteers. Our shops are vital in supporting the services we offer caring for animals in your community. We accept all sorts of donations from everyone, and even textiles in an unsellable condition can still be recycled to help the environment and our charity.

Volunteers at our shops can get involved in a range of activities:  greeting and serving customers, handling cash, organising the donations, pricing, window dressing, placing stock on the shop floor and steaming clothing.  Our volunteers range in age, and all come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are students, some work part time, some are stay at home parents, some are retired, some work full time….the list goes on and on. Any time you can give is appreciated greatly.

But what do you get from volunteering? Well, for a start you will be able to go home knowing you’ve made a difference in the lives of animals. You will have a chance to meet some amazing people: from your fellow volunteers to the customers. It’s a wonderful way to get involved in your local community. You will learn valuable retail skills, boost your confidence and, if you are a young person stuck in a ‘need a job for experience but need experience for a job’ circle, it’s a great way to get some experience and a reference for your CV!

If you don’t think working in one of our shops is for you, the RSPCA has many volunteering opportunities such as working in their kennels, catterys, fundraising, or fostering animals. Check out your local branch of the RSPCA for more information.

He also needs someone to keep him entertained at home, and a bit of company.  He knows basic training, but would love to know more. He is a smart boy, so it shouldn’t take long at all!
